Registration is now open for 6-week program featuring weekly topics including reducing stress, improving communication

The Erie County Department of Senior Services will offer "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" classes beginning later this month designed to provide caregivers with the tools needed to take care of themselves.

The six weekly sessions, each two-and-a-half hours in length, will teach caregivers how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings, and locate helpful resources. Participants will also learn how to improve their ability to make difficult decisions and find balance in their lives.

"Caregivers often find themselves under heavy pressure from the demands placed on them by caring for a loved one, and they can feel frustrated and worn out," Commissioner of Senior Services Timothy Hogues said. "These classes help caregivers to realize that they are not alone and that help and resources are available to them. I encourage anyone who is caring for a loved one to attend and find out more."

"Powerful Tools for Caregivers" classes will be offered at the following location, dates and times:

•ECMC Campus Terrace View Long-Term Care Facility, 462 Grider St., Buffalo; Thursday, Jan. 19, through Thursday, Feb. 23, 4:30-7 p.m.

Pre-registration is required. Call 716-858-7096 or email [email protected] for more information.

Additional classes are being scheduled. There is a $25 cost for the course, which includes a copy of "The Caregiver Helpbook." The complete course cost is covered for all Blue Cross/Blue Shield of WNY and Independent Health members, and course costs may be covered by Health Foundation for those without insurance.

"Powerful Tools for Caregivers" classes are supported by the Erie County Department of Senior Services, the Erie County Caregiver Coalition, and the New York State Office of the Aging.
