Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Co., issued the following statement on Carrie Fisher's passing on Tuesday:

"Carrie Fisher was one-of-a-kind, a true character who shared her talent and her truth with us all with her trademark wit and irreverence. Millions fell in love with her as the indomitable Princess Leia; she will always have a special place in the hearts of 'Star Wars' fans as well as all of us who were lucky enough to know her personally. She will be sorely missed, and we join millions of fans and friends around the world who mourn her loss today."

Published accounts stated Fisher suffered a heart attack Dec. 23 while aboard an airplane en route to Los Angeles. She was taken to a hospital, where reports first suggested she was stable, and in the intensive care unit.

The iconic film actress and author was 60.

It was in 2012 that The Walt Disney Co. agreed to acquire the "Star Wars" franchise from Lucasfilm LTD. The company released "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015. The film reunited Fisher with original cast members Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill. "Episode VII" became the highest-grossing film of all time domestically, taking in more than $935 million at the box office. Fisher recently participated in "Episode VIII," which is set for release Dec. 15, 2017.
