"Amahl and the Night Visitors," by Gian Carlo Menotti, was the first opera written specifically for television. It immediately became a holiday classic in the 1950s. The story of a poor woman and her son who get some unexpected visitors on a journey following a star is a moving reminder of the meaning of the season.

"Amahl and the Night Visitors" will be staged at First Presbyterian Church, 100 Church St., Youngstown, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18. The performance, running under an hour in length, is free to attend.

The local cast includes Dominic Townsend, James Burritt, Lonnie Arnold, Rex Stewart, Peter Andres and Anne DeFazio. The show also features the First Presbyterian Choir and the Wilson Vocal Ensemble.
