On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3, the Niagara Falls Education Foundation will present the 17th annual boys basketball Cataract City Classic at Niagara Falls High School. The event includes schools from all over Western New York, as well as schools from Rochester. Schools from the Niagara Region include Niagara Falls, Wilson and Niagara Catholic.

The Niagara Falls Education Foundation was founded in 2002 and has been ensuring athletic and educational programs are provided to students of the Niagara Falls City School District. Alumni and volunteers work throughout the course of the year to raise funds and provide opportunities for students. Alumni and businesses support the foundation through personal and corporate contributions.

The foundation envisions children participating in fun, healthy and safe activities during and after school, and see students as having a chance to further their learning beyond high school. The goal is to enable all children to have these opportunities.

For the past 17 years, the proceeds of the Cataract City Classic have gone toward scholarships for Niagara Falls High School students. The scholarships are handed out at the annual scholarship and alumni recognition dinner, usually held in the spring, where the foundation recognizes the excellence in the district's student body.

The foundation is also on its fourth year of the Cataract City Classic hockey tournament at the Hyde Park Ice Arena. On Dec. 29 and 30, the classic will feature four teams (North Tonawanda, Lewiston-Porter, Amherst and Niagara Falls) in a two-day tournament that features championship and consolation games.

Tom Lowe at Niagara University recruits volunteers through Niagara University's athletic department and Learn and Serve office, as well as publicly on Facebook. This year, the foundation announced there are more than 20 volunteers for the Cataract City Classic.
