The Historical Association of Lewiston's September program is titled "The Niagara Gorge and its 12,000 Year Story." The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston.

Dr. Paul Young, professor emeritus and Koessler Distinguished Professor at Canisius College, will present on the Niagara Gorge.

Event organizers said many, even in Western New York, are unaware Niagara Falls and its gorge have been shaped by the tremendous forces of past glaciers and river systems into five distinct sections. Each has its own characteristics and related stories, including whirlpool reversal, the other left-behind falls along the Niagara escarpment, rock structures transported from both the northern and southern hemispheres, coral beds, dry falls and glacier Lake Tonawanda.

Young was born in Western New York and is an alum of Buffalo State College, Canisius College and the University of Georgia. As a navy veteran, his tour of duty took him to many Pacific Islands and, later through his travels, gave him the opportunity to expand his interests in global science while developing a deeper appreciation for his local environment.

For years, he has researched, viewed and photographed many facets of Niagara Falls and its gorge. This focus has culminated in the publication, "The Falls, Survivor of the Ice Age."

In addition to his teaching, Young has led many natural science field trips and tours to the falls for students, professional staff and community groups.

This event is free and open to all, and refreshments will be served.
