NBC Olympics' primetime coverage of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, continued Monday on the networks of NBCUniversal.

Primetime host Bob Costas opened up coverage on NBC from NBC Olympics' studio located inside the International Broadcast Center in Rio. Primetime coverage on Day 3 of the Rio Games was highlighted by Lilly King winning her first Olympic gold medal with a victory in the 100m breaststroke over Russian Yulia Efimova, gold and bronze medal wins by Americans Ryan Murphy and David Plummer in the 100m backstroke, and Michael Phelps' clash with South Africa's Chad le Clos in the 200m fly semifinal. Phelps finished second in his heat, ahead of le Clos.

In addition to swimming, primetime coverage on NBC included the American tandem of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross in beach volleyball, and the finals of the men's gymnastics team competition.

Coverage also featured a brief essay by Costas on the impressive performances by the U.S. women at the Rio Games thus far. The U.S. features the most female athletes by any delegation in Olympic history - 292 - which makes up 53 percent of the American contingent.

Following are highlights from Monday's evening and primetime coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on the networks of NBCUniversal:

Costas on the strength of the U.S. women at the Rio Games: "Saturday, the first gold medal of these games was won by an American woman - 19-year-old West Virginia University student Ginny Thrasher, in the air rifle. ... After three days of competition, along with Thrasher and, of course, Katie Ledecky and tonight Lilly King, American women's teams in particular have been thriving."

SWIMMING - NBC

Analyst Rowdy Gaines on Lilly King's win over Russia Efimova in the 100m breaststroke: "That's a statement swim right there for the rest of the world. ... She says, 'Hello Russia - meet my finish.' "

King to Michele Tafoya on the potential impact of her win over Efimova: "Obviously, winning an Olympic gold medal is probably making a statement. ... We can still compete clean and do well at the Olympic Games. That's how it should be."

Gaines on King's reaction to Efimova, who was allowed to compete in Rio amidst controversy surrounding positive tests for banned substances: "If it takes a young 19-year old to make a stand, I'm all for it. She's fearless out of the water - no doubt about it."

Gaines on South Africa's Chad le Clos, who stared down Michael Phelps prior to their race in the 200m fly semifinal: "He has not taken his eyes off of Phelps the entire time. ... That's the wrong person to stare down."

Hicks on le Clos, who turned to see Phelps during the end of the 200m fly semifinal: "He can't take his eyes off him in the ready room, not on the blocks, not in the pool."

Gaines on the upcoming battle between Katie Ledecky and Sarah Sjostrom in Tuesday's 200m free final: "This is going to be a heck of a race. You don't want to miss this tomorrow night. Two gold medalists already here in Rio going at it tomorrow night. ... I don't think Ledecky took a hard stroke, and I also think Sjostrom's got a lot left to show. ... You could at least see an Olympic record tomorrow, maybe a world record."

Gaines on Missy Franklin: "I think she was in a bit of a cocoon in high school and college. And all of a sudden the real world approached her when she turned pro, and along with that goes a lot of commitments. I think she's handled it very well, but she's always had a hard time saying, 'No.' She's just so nice and so wonderful to be around, and some people maybe have taken advantage of that."

Gaines on Franklin following her eighth place finish in the 200m free semifinal heat: "Tough swim. It's not going to be the first great champion that's going to have a tough swim. We've seen it over and over again during our career together, watching so many great ones go by the wayside. And she's certainly not done with her career. She's got the 200m backstroke - this is not the end. It's just the end here at these Olympic games in the 200m freestyle. She needs to stay positive and bounce back."

BEACH VOLLEYBALL - NBC

Play-by-play announcer Chris Marlowe on Team USA's dominant win over China in preliminary round action (21-16, 21-9): "The second set perhaps the best set Walsh Jennings and Ross have ever played. ... That's in the 'Wow' department."

Analyst Dain Blanton: "That was perfection ... playing as such a cohesive unit. China didn't have a chance. ... Kerri Walsh Jennings is absolutely on fire and just relishing every single moment here at the Olympic Games."

BOXING - NBCSN

Play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice on American Nico Hernandez's upset win over Vasilii Egorov by unanimous decision in the light flyweight division: "Nico Hernandez has pulled the shocker of the tournament so far knocking off the No. 2 seed."

Analyst B.J. Flores on Hernandez's win over Egorov: "Nico Hernandez really accomplished something great tonight with the performance he had against the No. 2 seed. ... This kid barely has any international experience, and to step up on this big platform and defeat the No. 2 seed like he did is very unexpected - he's got a lot to be proud of."

BASKETBALL - NBCSN

Reporter Ros Gold-Onwude on Coach K's sense of humor: "Kevin Durant said Coach K makes everybody feel relaxed and comfortable, because he'll crack a joke on you while at the same time lacing it with his message."

Play-by-play announcer Marv Albert in response: "I know that Coach K does have a good sense of humor, you know him extremely well, but I don't think he'll be doing standup at Chuckles Comedy Club in Durham."
