NT couple's home picked for Project H.O.P.E.

North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas recently announced that Jesse Gooch, proprietor of Painters Plus, has selected the winner of the sixth annual Project H.O.P.E. contest. Thomas and Estelle Stobnicki of 171 Lindsay Place, North Tonawanda, were selected among several entries submitted for the painting makeover.

Project H.O.P.E., which stands for "helping others paint exteriors," was initiated by Gooch in 2011 and was set up to help people in difficult situations.

The contest's selection criteria focus on those who are disabled (including veterans), elderly or suffering from financial hardships.

"There were several good entries submitted for the contest and it was challenging to make the final decision," Gooch said. "I believe this couple has had some hardship in life and I thought they could use a helping hand. This is what we are about."

The Stobnickis are in their 70s and, with Thomas suffering debilitating complications from a stroke four years ago, house maintenance has been very difficult for the couple to perform.

The Stobnickis' home was last painted in 2000. Now, it will be pressure-washed, primed and painted by the Painters Plus crew and their volunteers. Pappas, along with other city officials, will assist with the project. The painting event will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Additional volunteers are welcome.

"This is a great project that helps not only the homeowner, but the entire neighborhood," Pappas said. "I want to commend Jesse Gooch and his team from Painters Plus for his volunteer efforts in giving back to our city."

Sherwin Williams, located on Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda, will provide the paint for Project H.O.P.E. In addition, Submasters will donate food and beverages for volunteers helping with the event.
