Bank will provide financial support to help provide shelter services and educational resources

The First Niagara Foundation is providing $10,000 in grant funding for Jericho Road Community Health Center's Vive Shelter to provide temporary shelter, food and access to legal assistance to people who have fled persecution in their home countries to seek asylum in the U.S.

Social workers provide counseling, trauma support and life skills training to help immigrant families achieve self-sufficiency.

"First Niagara is proud to partner with Jericho Road Community Health Center and empower our immigrant families with the resources they need to begin new lives here in Buffalo," said Elizabeth Gurney, executive director of the First Niagara Foundation. "Our support will provide opportunities for immigrants to navigate the road to citizenship, learn to live in a new country, and develop the skills they need for life-long success."

"For over 30 years, Vive's services to people seeking asylum have met a critical need in our community," said Anna Ireland, Ph.D., chief program officer at Jericho Road Community Health Center. "We are pleased to partner with the First Niagara Foundation to continue Vive's legacy of care and support asylum seekers on a pathway toward citizenship and self-sufficiency."

The First Niagara Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable entity. Founded in 1998, the First Niagara Foundation is committed to supporting organizations in the communities in which members live and work, with specific focus on youth and education, community development and neighborhood revitalization. In 2015, the First Niagara Foundation contributed nearly $6 million in charitable grants to community partners across the bank's four-state footprint.
