Current co-chair and board member brings knowledge of programs, initiatives to position

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced his appointment of Karen King to the position of executive director of the Erie County Commission on the Status of Women. King had served as the commission's co-chair and as a commission board member since 2013, including service as chair of the commission's women's action committee. She has also been closely involved in ECCSW initiatives and educational efforts such as pay equity and Women's History Month.

"I look forward to working with Ms. King in her new role as executive director, and continuing to protect and promote women's rights in Erie County. She brings extensive knowledge of the ECCSW and its activities, strong institutional relationships, and a wide-ranging skill set that will be ideal in the position," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. "It is imperative that we continue to promote equality in the workplace, eliminate pay inequity, and create safer communities by educating on the pervasive danger of domestic violence. Ms. King will be an effective and vocal advocate in these areas and more."

The ECCSW's mission is to seek the elimination of discrimination in any form that may exist on account of gender; to fully utilize the potential of each citizen, regardless of gender, in order to preserve the democratic way of life; and to provide equal opportunities to all citizens, regardless of gender, in employment, education, health and mental health, housing, senior and social services, and before the law.
