United Way volunteer day will pair organizations in need of assistance with volunteers

United Way of Buffalo & Erie County is accepting project submissions from nonprofit organizations in Erie County for the annual Day of Caring, Western New York's largest one-day volunteer event that will connect thousands of volunteers with projects to assist area nonprofit organizations.

Day of Caring attracts a variety of companies each year whose employees volunteer their time for the day to contribute to the community. This year it will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, and is sponsored by Geico, GM Tonawanda Engine Plant/GM Foundation, HSBC Bank USA N.A., National Grid and Wegmans. In past years, projects have included painting, weeding gardens and landscaping, general cleanup, participating in events for children and seniors, organization and administrative help and more. Agencies can submit full or half-day volunteer opportunities.

Organized by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, the annual event is designed to provide volunteer manpower to nonprofit organizations for projects and services that would otherwise cost organizations resources that could be spent on fulfilling their missions. At the same time, local companies and their employees have the opportunity to work together and contribute to local organizations that strengthen the community. Last year, more than 3,000 volunteers from 145 companies lent their time, talent and manpower to benefit 126 local nonprofit organizations.

Michael Weiner, UWBEC president and CEO, said, "We encourage any local nonprofit organization to take advantage of this great resource to help tackle projects that they may not otherwise be able to. Our volunteer base grows every year and we want to make sure we can provide an opportunity to help for everyone. It is a great way to introduce your organization to new audiences, as well."

Any organization in Erie County with a 501(c)(3) status can participate. Volunteers are available to paint, garden, clean, deliver meals, assist with field trips and more. To sign up, contact Bernie Miltenberger at 716-887-2746 or [email protected]. The deadline for project submissions is Friday, May 13.

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County brings people, organizations and resources together to improve community well-being.
