Island of Hope: Painting the Town Purple

Sat, Apr 23rd 2016 07:00 am

Committee members for the 2016 Relay For Life will bring the Town Commons alive with purple April 30 in preparation for the annual Paint the Town Purple event, which takes place nationally May 1.

Bows will be available for purchased on April 30 at the First Niagara Bank branch on Grand Island Boulevard from 9 a.m. noon as well as at deSignet Jewelers at 1869 Whitehaven Road. Large bows are $5 and will be available while supplies last. Smaller bows will also be available for a $1 donation.

The Grand Island Relay For Life encourages the town to get creative and spread the word. Committee members are encouraging all Grand Islanders to follow their lead as well as inspiring others to follow; when someone asks why a front door is purple, be sure to tell them May 1 is May Day for Relay.

King of the Wing April 29

Lynn Dingey, tri-chair of the Grand Island Relay For Life, reports the King of the Wing Relay event will take place across the state on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. A team of three men and three girls at each location will eat as many wings as they can in 10 minutes to win the King of the Wing trophy. There's a fundraising challenge too, where the event raising the most money in the fight against cancer will also win a trophy.

The event started when Brooklyn challenged Western New York to a wing-eating contest. It has grown to include Syracuse, Manhattan, Nassau County, and Suffolk County.

The WNY team event will be at Say Cheese on Love Road on April 29. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with the actual contest at 7:30 p.m.
