Assemblyman John Ceretto announced he supported a robust anti-poverty initiative for Niagara Falls in the 2016-17 state budget.

The City of Niagara Falls is slated to receive $1.5 million in funding to help combat poverty through the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative. These funds will be used to help design and implement coordinated solutions that tackle poverty, Ceretto said.

"We've taken great pains to create a budget that works for all New Yorkers," Ceretto explained. "The $1.5 million anti-poverty initiative for Niagara Falls will help spur innovative, far-reaching ideas and provide the funding necessary to help people on a tremendous scale."

Under this initiative, city officials will select a not-for-profit organization that has demonstrated successful performance working with community stakeholders. The nonprofit organization will assemble an antipoverty task force comprised of local officials and residents, community groups and school district representatives. The task force will focus on topics such as childhood poverty and housing insecurity, providing opportunities for enhanced work activity, career readiness and job training.

"The funding Assemblyman Ceretto helped secure in this budget has the potential to be truly transformative, offering us a chance to revitalize both our city itself and the lives of residents who have experienced profound economic hardship," Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster said.
