Niagara Hospice has announced an opportunity for readers to get out of the house after a long winter.

Community members interested in experiences that make a positive impact on the lives of others, as well as their own, are invited to the next hospice volunteer training to be held from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 26. The spring training is being offered for new volunteers who want to join the Niagara Hospice volunteer team.

Hospice volunteers provide companionship and support for patients by visiting them in their home, or in the nursing home or assisted living facility. Volunteer activities include conversation and reminiscing; putting together puzzles or playing games; running errands for the family; or simply just holding a hand and listening. Volunteer positions include patient-related and non-patient-related jobs. Visits take place in the patient's or caregiver's home, at Niagara Hospice House, and at area long-term-care facilities where hospice patients reside.

The agency is especially in need of volunteers from the Niagara Falls area. Non-patient-related opportunities include helping with community outreach, clerical tasks and fundraising efforts of Niagara Hospice.

The April 26 training will be held at the administrative building on the Niagara Hospice campus at 4675 Sunset Drive in Lockport. Anyone interested can contact the volunteer office at 716-280-0748 for an application or to register. More information and volunteer applications are also available at www.NiagaraHospice.org.

Niagara Hospice has served more than 25,000 Niagara County residents since 1988. Hospice is specialized care for the terminally ill. Niagara Hospice provides supportive services to both the patient and family - providing comfort, dignity and choice.
