April 16 is celebrated as National Health Care Decisions Day and, to recognize the importance of making one's health care wishes known, Niagara Hospice will host an advance care planning program. The public is invited at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, to the Niagara Hospice Administrative Building at 4675 Sunset Drive in Lockport for a program that is free and open to the community.

Cheryl Ferguson, BSW, MSW, Niagara Hospice medical social worker, will explain health care proxies (HCP), living wills, do not resuscitate (DNR) and medical orders for life-sustaining treatment (MOLST).

"As a result of National Health Care Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their health care decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known," Ferguson said. "Fewer families and health care providers will have to struggle with making difficult health care decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and health care providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance health care planning issues before a crisis, and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so."

Free forms and light refreshments will be available. Call 716-280-0742 by April 11 to register. For more information, visit the event calendar page at www.NiagaraHospice.org. For more information about National Health Care Decision Day, visit www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org.

Niagara Hospice has provided end-of-life comfort, care and support since 1988 to over 25,000 Niagara County individuals and families faced with terminal illness. No one is ever denied hospice care due to inability to pay. For more information, visit www.NiagaraHospice.org or call 716-HOSPICE.
