Fri, Apr 1st 2016 06:30 pm

Longtime Islander Patricia Pullano passed away unexpectedly March 22, 2016, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Buffalo to Martin and Genevieve Heavey in 1933. She graduated from Niagara University with a degree in nursing and worked in the field until after her marriage to John (Jack) Pullano in 1959. They moved to the Island in 1963, where they raised six children and were foster parents to over a dozen more; as well, she was known as "Ma P" to many of her children's friends.

Pat was active until her death; she taught nursing for many years at Niagara County Community College, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and at Elderwood on Grand Island. She was a giving and generous person who enjoyed helping others, playing bridge and reading. She was most proud of and devoted to her nine grandchildren; and was happiest when she was attending one of their events; whether it was at a rink, a field, a performance or a concert.

She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1998. She is survived by her children: Josephine (William) Malesky, John (Joanne), Joseph, Peggy (Robert) Carroll, James (Kelly), and Jeremy (Jennifer) Pullano. She was devoted to her grandchildren: Allison, Franklin, Megan, Bobby, Anthony, Jack, Anourine, Anna and Dominic. She is also survived by her sister, Sr. Mary Judith Heavey, SSMN; her brother, Martin (Kathryn) Heavey; in-laws Antoinette (late Patsy) Pullano, Dominic (late Peggy) Pullano, and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

There will be an Irish wake held in Pat's honor for family and friends at Peggy's home, 170 Old Carriage House Road, Grand Island, Friday, April 1, starting at 4 p.m., and a memorial Mass Saturday, April 2, at St. Stephen R.C. Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island at 10 a.m.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur Memorial Fund, 241 Lafayette Ave., Buffalo 14213.
