Poloncarz, Erie County's Department of Social Services announce Black History Luncheon Celebration

Event will recognize efforts of one foster couple, two county employees, three independent living youths

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and the Erie County Department of Social Services Black History Luncheon Celebration committee today announced details of the 19th annual Black History Luncheon Celebration, set to take place Friday, Feb. 26.

The one-hour event, which will feature the theme "Destined for Greatness," will begin at noon and take place at Emerson Commons, 86 W. Chippewa St., in the City of Buffalo. The festivities will include the recognition of one foster couple, two county employees and three independent living youths for their various contributions to the community.

"As we celebrate Black History Month, we should all take time to reflect on our nation's history and how, for nearly two centuries, the African-American community has fought for equal rights and justice - often times while facing fierce and at times violent opposition," Poloncarz said. "We must continue to fight for justice and equality, which is why this annual luncheon is a tremendous opportunity to recognize some outstanding people who are true role models in our community. I applaud both the hard-working members of the committee who organized this event and those individuals who will be recognized for the unselfish work they do each and every day to help make Erie County a better place in which to live for everyone."

Recipients of the individual honors will include:

•Elaine P. Paige Award: Lashawn Chinn

•Ronald V. Jones "Uncrowned King" Award: Obioma Oparah

•Independent Living Youth Awards: James Moye, Danesha Donaldson and Darlena Tyler

•Foster Parent Award: Annette and Pearlie Northington
