West Side Rowing Club hosts high school open house

Stop by the West Side Rowing Club for its winter open house to learn more about its winter rowing programs for junior athletes (grades 7-12) at all experience levels. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 9, at One Rotary Row (GPS: 48 Porter Ave.), Buffalo.

Enjoy a tour of the boathouse, learn about winter programs for male and female athletes, meet the coaches and enjoy refreshments and camaraderie while relishing in a unique waterside view in Buffalo.

Who should attend? Anyone interested in learning more about the sport of rowing. The West Side Rowing Club offers programs for young athletes at all experience levels. This winter, there are opportunities for high school-aged athletes to participate in both non-competitive, learn-to-row programs and competitive varsity programs.

The West Side Rowing Club was founded in 1912 with a mission to promote the advancement of the physical, mental and moral well being of the youth in Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Since 1921, West Side has hosted high school teams from across Western New York.

Throughout its 100 years, West Side has won numerous national and international championship events, having sent more than 30 athletes to represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games and Elite World Championships. It's advanced hundreds of youth athletes to top collegiate schools and rowing programs across North America.

In 2007, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fontana Boathouse opened adjacent to the Doc Schaab Boathouse to form the West Side Rowing Club campus. With two boathouses, over 100 shells, 400 feet of dock, 20,000-plus square feet of indoor training space and the only indoor rowing tank in Western New York, the West Side Rowing Campus is a premier rowing and training center in Buffalo and one of the top training centers in the country.
