Lew-Port senior class hosts first Halloween Dash 5K

The Lewiston-Porter Class of 2016 hosted a 1K Kids Run/Walk along with a competitive 5K-race Halloween morning at the high school. The event was open to students and adults of all ages. Lew-Port senior Katie Beatty came up with the idea and pitched it to her friends and class advisers at the start of the school year. A planning committee comprised of students, faculty and administrators met in early October and plans were quickly put into motion.

The 1K Kids run took place entirely on school grounds to keep participants safe. Student volunteers lined the course and handed out treats to children while guiding them across campus and back to the finish line.

The certified 5K-course looped from Lew-Port High School around Calkins Road and back to campus via Creek Road. The event featured music, face painting, pumpkin decorating, candy giveaways and a costume contest with plenty of prizes. It raised more than $1,600 for the Class of 2016 to help defray the cost of the senior prom.

Race Management Solutions, operated by the Beatty family, donated professional timing and race management services. The event was deemed such a success that the Beatty family pledged to make it an annual tradition.
