Over the past nine years, participants have raised over $1.3 million for the local athletes of Special Olympics New York. On Dec. 5, thousands of participants will come together to celebrate the ninth annual "Polar Plunge" to benefit Special Olympics at Woodlawn Beach State Park. This year alone, the plunge is expecting to raise over $160,000 with 1,300 participants.

Participants who raise $100 will receive an official "Polar Plunge" hoodie; those who raise $500 will have sponsored a Special Olympic athlete for an entire year. It is never too late to sign up. To get started, visit www.PolarPlungeNY.org/buffalo and click "register here" to create a personal fundraising page, create a team or join an existing team.

The Buffalo "Polar Plunge" will help raise funds to provide year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities. With more than 65,000 athletes across New York, the state currently has the largest Special Olympics program in the country. Special Olympics New York offers these programs at no cost to its athletes, their families or caregivers.

To gear up for the "Polar Plunge," officials have created a new event, a "Halloween Bash," which is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at The WareHouse. The "Halloween Bash" will initiate the five-week countdown to the plunge. The event will be packed with guest bartenders and auction items. All are invited to join this event to support Special Olympics. Tickets for this event are $20 pre-sale (www.tinyurl.com/15bash) or $25 at the door, and include draft beer, well drinks, wine, food and a chance to win a door prize. In true plunge style, costumes are strongly encouraged.
