Funding will provide at-risk children materials needed for reading education

Buffalo City Mission received an $8,500 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo to help improve school readiness of children through the Shape-A-Space Reading Library Center at the Cornerstone Manor. The funds will include a moveable library book cart and browser box, 35 educational book sets, 24 themed box sets of learning materials and hands-on phonics resources and learning materials to advance the reading skills of at-risk pre-kindergarten children.

"We are thankful to the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo for their generous donation," Buffalo City Mission Executive Director and CEO Stuart L. Harper said. "Every dollar counts, and this money will help to further prepare children to develop strong reading skills to enrich their education and lead to brighter academic futures."

In the City of Buffalo, an estimated 52 percent of children under the age of 5 live below the poverty line - placing them at significantly higher risk of falling behind in the classroom. To address this, the Shape-A-Space Reading Library Center evaluates each child's individual learning needs through a detailed assessment process.

The center will assist approximately 25 children with early vocabulary and literacy development - assessing progress after two weeks in the program. Using the results and purchased materials through the grant, teachers will develop strategic lesson plans to enhance and improve the academic environment for all participating students.

The Buffalo City Mission, founded in 1917, is a not-for-profit organization that provides preventative, emergency and long-term recovery services to thousands of people who are homeless or impoverished. For more information, visit www.buffalocitymission.org or call 716-854-8181.
