Extension to offer backyard chicken classes

Fri, Sep 25th 2015 04:20 pm

With the growing popularity of local food, people are becoming increasingly interested in raising their own chickens for eggs and meat. As fall and winter are the best times to prepare for new chickens, which are widely available in the spring, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County will offer a series of two classes on raising backyard chickens.

Before people bring home their new feathered friends, there are several things they need to consider. Do local municipal laws allow them to keep chickens on their property? How many and what breed of chickens will be best?

The cost for the classes is $10 each or both for $15. Class No. 1, "Backyard Chicken Basics," will take place form 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 1. Class No. 2, "Backyard Chicken Keeping," will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15.

The instructor will be Amanda Henning, agriculture and food systems educator. Classes will take place at CCE Niagara County, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport, at the 4-H Training Center (small meeting room).

To learn more about backyard chicken keeping, sign up for one or both of the classes. To register, call Karen at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County at 716-433-8839, ext. 221.
