McCormick running for Wheatfield supervisor

Fri, Sep 25th 2015 04:20 pm

Gerald McCormick is pleased to announce his candidacy for Wheatfield town supervisor.

The Town of Wheatfield has been home to McCormick and his wife, Janet, since 1978. This is where they raised their three children - Justin, Melissa and Brian, all of whom attended Starpoint schools. He is proud to be a veteran of the United States Navy. Currently, he is a life member of Adams Fire Co., where he has served over the years as an emergency medical technician, firefighter, fire police and treasurer. For three years he served on the Niagara County Youth Board.

McCormick retired from General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant after 33 years. While employed there, he served in numerous elected and appointed union positions, including six years as president of the United Auto Workers local 774. In that capacity, he gained a wide range of experiences that would serve him well as town supervisor - management of finances and personnel, lobbying elected officials in Albany and Washington and negotiating contracts. After leaving General Motors, he worked as a labor benefits representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield.

For the past 20 years, the Town of Wheatfield has been governed by only one political party, and many of the same faces for a lot of that time. McCormick feels it is time for new ideas and new faces at Town Board meetings. He also strongly believes in term limits for both supervisor and board members.

If he is elected supervisor along with his running mates, Shirley Joy and Robert Flammia, they promise to make term limits a first priority on their agenda. People need to get out and vote in November if they want to see a more open and responsive town government.

Another concern McCormick shares with many residents he has spoken to is the inadequacy of the town roads. The current roads are failing to meet the demands of Wheatfield's growing population. He experienced the inadequacies himself as an Adams first responder. McCormick responded to three vehicular accidents in three consecutive days on Shawnee Road during rush hour. He promises to work with the county and state to help resolve the problems on Shawnee and other major town thoroughfares.

McCormick has the endorsement of the Wheatfield Democratic Committee, the Niagara County Democratic Committee and the United Auto Workers Union.
