Buffalo City Mission raises $30,000 through its 9th annual Ride for the Homeless

Agency surpasses fundraising goal, increases participation by 44 percent from last year's event

Proceeds benefit underprivileged children at the organization's afterschool program at Cornerstone Manor

Buffalo City Mission raised $30,000 over the weekend at its ninth Ride for the Homeless, an annual motorcycle run to benefit the afterschool program at Cornerstone Manor, the agency's shelter for women and children.

This year's event surpassed its fundraising goal of $28,500 and saw a 44 percent increase in rider participation. Proceeds from the event will provide underprivileged children with resources, guidance and opportunities needed to achieve their academic goals.

"Every day, more children fall behind in their studies due to the lack of a structured, nurturing environment," Buffalo City Mission Associate Executive Director Aubrey Calhoun said. "Funds raised through this annual event are an important step in changing that trend. We are extremely thankful to the riders, guests and sponsors that helped make this year's ride the best yet."

The Ride for the Homeless also advances the afterschool program's mission to provide an outlet to help children - of all grades - achieve academic success and manage stress. It further provides the tools for them to build strong relationships with peers and interact with tutors and mentors.

Saturday's 50-mile ride throughout Niagara County had 108 participants.
