The offices of Congressman Chris Collins and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will host two informational workshops where staff members with the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide an overview of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
Representatives from the fire program specialist office of FEMA will give a presentation on new and previously existing policies, guidelines and requirements for the AFG. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
The workshop will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Lancaster Fire Department, 5423 Broadway; and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Mendon Fire Department, 101 Mendon Ionia Road, Mendon.
Both workshops will cover the same material.
"First responders are an integral part of the safety of any community," Collins said. "The selfless service local fire departments provide is immeasurable. It is vital these local fire companies have the tools and resources they need to keep their members safe and effectively protect our community. Federal grants play a critical role in accomplishing those goals.
"I look forward to working with our local fire departments to provide the necessary help they need in applying for these grants."
"We must ensure that our first responders who are on the frontlines have the most up-to-date equipment they need during emergency situations," Gillibrand said. "The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program allows our communities to invest in critical resources that will help keep firefighters safe and carry out their lifesaving work more effectively. We must make sure our local fire departments have every resource necessary to keep our communities safe."
To register, local departments should call Collins' Geneseo office at 585-519-4002.
