Obit: Theodore S. Golda

Longtime Grand Island resident Theodore S. Golda entered into rest July 14, 2015.

Born Sept. 27, 1928, in Niagara Falls, he was the husband of Marlene Golda; father of Steven (Shari) Golda of Marieta, California; Lisa (Ed) Bookhagen of Grand Island; and Jacqueline Golda of Grand Island. He was the grandfather of Brittney and Steven Golda, and Alexander and Christopher Bookhagen; and the brother of Helene (Fred) Motyka and the late Edward Golda.

A service with full military honors was held Thursday, July 23, at the Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park on Grand Island.

Golda was raised on a small dairy in Utica. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1947 and spent six years on active duty from 1947 to 1953. He was stationed in Hawaii, Guam, the Philippine Islands and Japan. In 1952, he stood honor guard for President Harry S. Truman when he visited the Coast Guard Academy. In 1960, he enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves as chief warrant officer W-4 until 1988. After retirement, he spent some time living in Mystic, Connecticut, where he worked as a shipwright at Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, where they built nuclear submarines.

He was a U.S. Border Patrol officer from 1964 to 1984. He worked in Del Rio, Texas, until being transferred to Buffalo in 1967. In 1974, he was promoted to supervisory Border Patrol agent, and later was appointed patrol agent in charge of the Buffalo Border Patrol Station in 1980. His son Steven was also a Border Patrol agent stationed in Temecula, California.
