Summer is now at hand. School is out, and vacations and good times aplenty are in the offing.

One event that cannot be missed when it comes to "fun" is the second annual Great Contraption Race on Saturday, Aug. 1. Taking place that morning on the lower river between Lewiston and Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, it's an on-the-water event where participants enter for as little as $150 (for a team of four), use their imaginations and create their own water-worthy "contraptions" and maneuver down the Niagara River for prizes and just plain fun times. An all-day party follows the race at Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown. All proceeds go to benefit the numerous programs of the It Happened to Alexa Foundation of Lewiston.

At this time, race signups continue, and organizers invite the public to attend an informational meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Mug & Musket Tavern in Youngstown to learn more.

Ellen Augello, executive director of the Alexa Foundation, is coordinating the Great Contraption Race. She said those interested in being a part of this will be able to learn all there is to know about this race - its purpose, its organization and the particulars. Race organizers and volunteers will be present, the entry and race rules will be explained, a prototype contraption will be on site and video tutorials will be available.

"If you have questions, want to learn more ... please come!" Augello said.

Interested residents are urged to attend. For more, visit www.ithappenedtoalexa.org or call 716-754-9105.

Better yet, visit the Mug & Musket on Monday.
