Brittany Mehzir, a Lewiston-Porter High School graduating senior, was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Lewiston Community Lions Tuesday. Lion Sheila Zuhlke, shown right, was present at the awards luncheon to present Mezhir with a check.

The Lewiston Community Lions offer an annual $500 scholarship to a Lewiston-Porter High School senior based solely on volunteer actions and community service.

Mezhir has been volunteering since fifth grade, and said she has a "huge dedication to community service." She has participated in American Red Cross blood drives, Earth Day cleanups, Salvation Army bell ringing, various food and clothing drives, and many other childrens events. Most recently, she volunteered at a HANCI senior citizen prom, which she said, "was an amazing experience hearing about what past generations were like during (their) high school years."

In addition to the events mentioned, Mezhir has volunteered at Oktoberfest, Run with the Rapids 5K, and breakfast with Santa. At these events, she helped with organizing the craft projects for the children attending. In her sophomore year of high school, she was chosen to participate in the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program.

Mezhir will attend the University of Pittsburgh and plans to continue her community service.

"Through volunteering, I have learned to be a leader and help others to achieve a common goal. Community service has helped me to become the person I am today: Someone who is involved, motivated and a confident individual," Mezhir said.
