Town of Lewiston resident and former state Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte has announced her candidacy for town council.

"I have been a student of government for many years and, after observing town government for the past several years, I believe it is time to get involved once again," she said. "As assemblywoman, I was successful in bringing significant financial resources to Lewiston and its school district, including infrastructure improvements, funding for cultural entities which support local businesses, agriculture our sportsmen and our children."

DelMonte, a Democrat, said her experience working in state government and familiarity with grant programs will benefit the town.

"I have been asked to contact state officials to secure information on various programs that can help the town," she said. "I am fortunate to have good working relations with officials at the local, state and federal levels."

DelMonte credits current Supervisor Dennis Brochey with bringing order to the town's fiscal situation and preventing a town tax.

"Supervisor Brochey has done a good job turning around Lewiston's finances," she said. "I believe we need to be vigilant in preventing financial boondoggles such as the Joseph Davis Park takeover and continue the path of fiscal prudence."

DelMonte said the Town Board needs to focus on infrastructure improvements and quality-of-life issues for Lewiston residents.

"We need to focus on investments that improve our quality of life, protect our natural assets, fix our infrastructure and keep hazardous waste trucks off our roads," she said.

DelMonte is one of two Democrats seeking Town Board positions. Rob Morreale also is running for a council seat while Mark Briglio is seeking the town supervisor's post.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed DelMonte chairwoman of USA Niagara in 2013.

She is a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church, the Lewiston Council on the Arts, the Lewiston Democratic Committee and the Saint Francis Guild of Mount St. Mary's hospital. She volunteers at Artpark and serves on its advisory board.
