As the hot summer months approach, Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, has introduced legislation to provide greater protection for animals by allowing a concerned citizen to remove a suffering pet that is sitting in an extremely hot vehicle.

"We've all heard the tragic stories of pets dying or sustaining serious health problems after being left in a vehicle for too long on hot days," Ceretto said. "This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately; we cannot allow another animal to fall victim to this mistake, especially during these hot summer months."

Assembly bill A.7715 would allow a person to take the necessary steps to remove an animal from a vehicle if a police officer or peace officer cannot be located. The person removing the animal would not be held criminally or civilly liable for the actions taken reasonably and in good faith to save a minor or animal from impending harm.

"I encourage my Assembly colleagues to join me in passing this bill so we can protect pets who can't protect themselves and have been carelessly left in a hot vehicle," Ceretto said.
