Joins American Lung Association in fight against lung cancer
Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined Tuesday by Deputy Erie County Executive Maria Whyte, Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein, and Erie County Commissioner of Public Advocacy Sawrie Becker to proclaim "Women's Lung Health Week" in Erie County.
Lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the primary cancer killer of women in 1987, and the lung cancer death rate among women has more than doubled in the past 35 years. Women's Lung Health Week serves as an educational outreach effort to raise awareness and provide information on the prevention, detection and treatment of all lung diseases.
A new ALA-led national movement, LUNG FORCE, has been created to unite women with a collective strength to fight lung cancer and promote lung health. As a sign of support, local landmarks including the Peace Bridge and HARBORCENTER will feature turquoise spotlights to symbolize their commitment to protecting women's lung health.
