Applications accepted until May 26

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $8 million in grants available through the Department of Veterans' Affairs for adaptive sports programs for veterans. Adaptive sports are activities that have been modified or designed specifically for those with disabilities.

"Transitioning from military to civilian life can be enormously stressful for our nation's service members," Higgins said. "Adaptive sports programs help veterans make that transition through developing a community and assisting with physical rehabilitation."

To be eligible for the grant for adaptive sports programs, applicants must be nonfederal entities with experience in managing large-scale adaptive sports programs. The grant may be used for program development, training, coaching, sports equipment, supplies, program evaluation and other needs.

The deadline to apply is May 26. Applications may be submitted online for a maximum award of $500,000. More information about the grant is available on the VA's website: http://www.va.gov/adaptivesports/va_grant_program.asp.

Originally named the U.S. Paralympics Integrated Adaptive Sports Program, the grant announcement coincides with the International Paralympic Committee's 2015 Sledge Hockey World Championships, which are currently taking place at HARBORCENTER in Buffalo until May 3. Last year, the VA awarded $8 million to adaptive sports programs in grants, impacting approximately 10,000 veterans across the country.
