Mount St. Mary's Hospital recognizes volunteers for contributing more than 60,000 hours of service

More than 220 volunteers from Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center and the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence were honored at the annual volunteer recognition luncheon Tuesday at the Niagara Falls Country Club. In 2014, more than 60,000 hours of service were given by volunteers at the hospital and nursing care residence to improve the lives of others. Volunteers represent the American Red Cross, Our Lady of Peace, Mount St. Mary's, "VanGo" drivers, St. Francis Guild, board of associates and senior companion program.

The fourth annual Outstanding Volunteer Award in Honor of Ruth Woolery was presented to Greta Thompson, a volunteer with the St. Francis Guild at Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

Individuals recognized for more than 500 hours of service include: Ken Blekelock, VanGo; Dolores Borowski, Child Care Center foster grandparent; Philo Brooks, VanGo; Nancy Christodoulides, surgery hostess; Richard Corsaro, VanGo; Marilyn Keenan, Child Care Center foster grandparent; Angie Kujawa, gift shop/information desk; Stephen LaBarber, info. desk; Milton Lindsay, mail cart; Donna Montie, coffee cart/north lobby; Ed Page (deceased) info. desk; Doug Reading, VanGo/EmStar; Lucille Rice, Mount St. Mary's/HANCI senior companion; Jean Rosenberg, gift shop/info. desk; Roland Rosati, north lobby/Eucharistic minister; Dolores Scarfone, EmStar; Mary Rose Thomas, gift shop/info. desk; Greta Thompson, SFG gift shop; and Jim Udy, VanGo.

Individuals recognized also included those who have served 20 or more years from Mount St. Mary's: Kathy Banks (22 years), Mary Lou Brennan (23 years), Dorothy Cicero (21 years), Rosemary Dann (27 years), Margaret Destino (30 years), Phyllis Eisenman, (21 years), Peter Fatouros (24 years), Jane Finn (27 years), Jessica Freeman (21 years), Janet Furlong (27 years), Dennis Horvath (27 years), Milt Lindsay (29 years), Marilyn Lojek (25 years), Arline Loughrey (26 years), Elizabeth McGhee, (21 years), Ed Page (31 years), Sarah Jean Pasek (22 years), Marianne Rampado (29 years), Cecilia Ryan (33 years), Barbara Scozzafavo (21 years), Sheila Spatar (29 years), Phyllis Ibaugh-Specyal (22 years), Joyce Switzer (26 years), Audrey Tower (22 years), Agnes Wakeman (25 years) and Eleanor Zelinski (26 years).

Individuals who reached 20 years of service this year are: Ann Gallagher, Mount St. Mary's Hospital; Joseph Marra, Mount St. Mary's Hospital; and Greta Thompson, St. Francis Guild.

An Our Lady of Peace, the Special Recognition Award was presented to Irving Morrell of Patient Transport.

"Our dedicated volunteers give so much to our patients and their families," said Judith A. Maness, president and CEO. "From greeting visitors at the main lobby, to escort and delivery and everything in between, they all touch the lives of our patients, staff and physicians. They are very special people."

Volunteers work in many areas of the hospital and nursing care residence and also operate the "VanGo" patient transportation system.

The program also welcomed new volunteers to the organization and said goodbye to volunteers who passed away in 2014.

New volunteers at Mount St. Mary's Hospital include: Gary Balcom, Anthony Borgese, Karen Bristol, Chuck Learn, Lori Manera, Joan Mapes, Tim Morgan, Margaret Niewiadomski, Lynda Schug and Bonnie Spacone.
