City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas announced the Arbor Day Foundation named the City of North Tonawanda "2014 Tree City USA" in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters.

In conjunction with this honor, the city will celebrate Arbor Day at 10 a.m. Friday, April 24, at Veterans Park on River Road, where a new tree has been planted by the Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks. Pappas will read a proclamation in observance of Arbor Day. Patrick Marren, senior forester with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will attend the celebration to present the city with its Tree City USA flag and designation certificate.

Residents are encouraged to attend the event.

"North Tonawanda is proud to be a community that makes the planting and care of trees a priority. Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits," Pappas said.
