Lewiston resident to seek seat held by retiring Ross

Lewiston resident Becky Wydysh announced today she is formally a candidate for the Niagara County Legislature. Wydysh is seeking the Second District seat currently held by Legislator William L. Ross of Wheatfield. Ross recently announced he would not be seeking re-election this year.

"Following someone who has been such a staple in county government, such as Bill Ross, is certainly a daunting task," Wydysh said. "That being said, I am confident that I can bring a level of representation and passion to the district that the residents of the Second District are accustomed to."

If elected, Wydysh said she hopes to serve on the county's community services and economic development committees.

"I have always believed that it is the role of government to cultivate an environment that is conducive to private capital investment," Wydysh said. "It is not the job of government to create jobs; it is the role of government to create an atmosphere that is attractive to business. In turn, jobs are created and the tax base is enhanced."

An advocate of smaller government and lower taxes, Wydysh plans to seek the Republican, Conservative and Independence party lines.

"Becky is an excellent candidate who has a firm grasp of the issues facing Niagara County," said Jim Heuer, chairman of the Niagara County and Town of Wheatfield Republican committees. "With the retirement of Legislator Ross, it's incumbent upon us to put forth the most viable candidate to represent the residents of Wheatfield and Lewiston. In Becky, we have found that individual."

Karl Frankovitch, chairman of the Lewiston Republican Committee, agreed with Heuer.

"I've spoken with Becky on multiple occasions," he said. "As a Lewiston resident, I have the utmost confidence in Becky's ability to hit the ground running. She understands the issues that are important to the residents of our community, and she is well-prepared to take those issues to the county."

Wydysh is currently employed by the New York State Unified Court System as the deputy commissioner of jurors in Niagara County. She is president of the board of directors for the Mental Health Association in Niagara County.

"After 18 years of working in civil service positions, running for office at this point in my life is a natural progression," Wydysh said. "Community service is very important to me and my family, and the opportunity to work on behalf of the wonderful people of Lewiston and Wheatfield as their representative in the Niagara County Legislature would be an honor."

Wydysh and her husband, Peter, reside in the Village of Lewiston with her daughter, Hannah. Her son, Ryan, is a criminal justice major at Niagara County Community College.
