Beatrice Rose Goodman celebrated her 100th birthday Feb. 27 with her friends at Elderwood of Grand Island.

Goodman was born in Buffalo Feb. 27, 1915, and was named after her grandmother, aunt and mother, all of whom had Rose in their names. She attended school in the East Delavan section of Buffalo hoping to be an English teacher, but her father required her to get a job, so she became a laboratory courier.

She married Alfred Daniel Goodman Aug. 30, 1940, in Buffalo and enjoyed 32 years of marriage. During that time she enjoyed fishing trips, gardening, fashion, sewing and home crafts. She was an active volunteer with the Amherst Senior Citizen Center.

Family in Arkansas and Tokyo, Japan, sent their love on the special occasion. Grand Island Supervisor Mary Cooke visited Elderwood to help celebrate the birthday as well. Cooke presented Goodman with a town proclamation from the Grand Island Town Board that "hereby extends its sincerest congratulations" to her on marking her 100th birthday, and further resolved to declare Feb. 27, 2015, Beatrice Rose Goodman Day throughout the Town of Grand Island.
