The Niagara County Department of Health nursing division is offering a free diabetes prevention program. It's scheduled to begin Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Town of Niagara Community Center, 7000 Lockport Road, Niagara Falls. Classes consist of 16 consecutive weekly sessions (1:30-2:30 p.m.), then once a month for six months to maintain healthy lifestyle changes.

Program participants will learn the skills they need to make lasting changes, such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active and managing stress.

People with pre-diabetes (those with a higher-than-normal fasting blood glucose - sugar - of 100-125 mg/dl) are five to 15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels. Many people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within three years if they do not take steps to prevent it. This program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes through modest lifestyle changes.

If your doctor has said you are pre-diabetic, and you would like to register for the class, call the Niagara County Department of Health nursing division at 716-278-1900.

If your group or organization is interested in scheduling a free diabetes prevention program, a diabetes self-management workshop or a chronic disease self-management workshop, call the Niagara County Department of Health nursing division at 716-278-1900.
