Youngstown Lions to hold nonperishable food drive

The Youngstown Lions is among the clubs participating in the Worldwide Week of Service this month. During the week of Jan. 10-16, Youngstown Lions Club officers and members will hold a nonperishable food drive to assist needy individuals residents in the Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter.

The purpose is "to eradicate the problem in our communities," said John MacArthur, food drive chairman and club third vice president.

"In commemoration of Lions International Worldwide Week of Service in January 2015, an opportunity to showcase the Youngstown Lions Club and celebrate the birth of Melvin Jones, founder of Lions International, we offer this week of celebration and service," MacArthur said.

Youngstown Lions are requesting residents in Youngstown and Porter to donate items during the food drive. Food collection boxes will be placed at the following locations: Youngstown Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St.; Porter Town Hall, 3265 Creek Road; First Niagara Bank, 421 Second St., and Victoria's Family Hair Care and Spa, 354 Main St.

Those unable to drop off food items but still wishing to donate can call MacArthur at 791-3243 to arrange for a pick up.

Following the collection drive, all nonperishable food items will be delivered to the Deacon's Cupboard at First Presbyterian Church, 100 Church St., and provided to those requesting assistance.

MacArthur said this program is for Youngstown and Porter residents only. Requests and the furnishing of food items will be during the normal business hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church.
