Students of Katherine Chadwick and Tricia McDonald at Kaegebein Elementary School joined in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code Dec. 8-14. These students participated in The Hour of Code Friday, Dec. 12.

The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and over 100 others, is a statement that today's generations of students are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success. These classes had a great introduction to coding and learned many new skills.

Launched in 2013, Code.org is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color.

According to Code.org, "Our vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. We believe computer science and computer programming should be part of the core curriculum in education, alongside other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses, such as biology, physics, chemistry and algebra."

In one week last year, 15 million students tried computer science. This year, the Hour of Code movement is aiming for 100 million students.

Computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. President Obama and entertainers Shakira and Ashton Kutcher all kicked off the Hour of Code with videos, and more than 100 partners came together to support this movement.
