Obit: Carl Miller

Carl Thomas Miller died peacefully in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 77.

Carl was born on July 7, 1937, in Niagara Falls.

He graduated from Sidway School as a class officer and lived all his younger life at the home of Bertha C. Hardy on Ransom Road, the site of the new high school.

Shortly after graduating high school, Carl served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his honorable discharge, he made his permanent residence in Wilmington. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Corrections from Dec. 18, 1979, to Feb. 29, 2000. He umpired for many years and, in 1986, he became a baseball and softball official with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

Carl dedicated his life to helping people, regardless of their race, background or wealth. He loved the Buffalo Bills. He loved his family, fellow Optimist Club members, umpires, his friends at the Sportsmans Club and the game of baseball and all who played it.

He is survived by his daughter, Carlette Marie Miller of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Violanti; nephews Gary Violanti and Anthony Violanti; niece Gina Calandrelli and extended family, all from Niagara Falls. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Clyde Miller, and stepmother Mildred.

A Mass in his name will be at 11:15 a.m., Jan. 11, at St. John De LaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls.
