Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, is reminding local high school students interested in attending one of the U.S. service academies that the last day to submit a request for a nomination is Friday. Service academy appointments are made by the president of the United States based on congressional and/or military nominations.

Each year, Higgins assembles a panel of local veterans to interview student candidates and make recommendations. His service academy panel will meet Jan. 10, 2015, to interview applicants.

Higgins hosted "Academy Night 2014" earlier this fall to provide an opportunity for high school students and their families, as well as school administrators and counselors to find out more about service academy institutions, programs and the application process. Representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC were present to answer questions and provide information relative to their respective school.

For additional information, contact Evelyn Williams in Higgins' office at 716-852-3501 or email [email protected].
