Impaired drivers are involved in nearly 60 percent of all Halloween highway fatalities nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration.

To illustrate the seriousness of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a group of Niagara University students coordinated a driving under impairment car crash simulation on campus Oct. 27.

The Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department, Mercy Flight, NU office of campus safety and student actors assisted in the simulation, which took place outside of the B. Thomas Golisano Center for Integrated Sciences.

"This event comes at an important time of the year to remind everyone to be responsible and safe, particularly as Halloween approaches," said Nichole Essig, president of the Niagara University Student Government Association's Class of 2017 delegation. "It allowed students and the community to see what happens at the scene of a car crash caused by a drunk driver."

Jonathan Schultz, Niagara County's director of emergency services and fire coordinator, narrated the demonstration.

Niagara University students served as actors in the simulation.
