Obit: Dana C. Boyle

Dana Cortright Boyle, 88, a resident of Grand Island for 58 years, passed away peacefully after a long illness at the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014.

Born Nov. 17, 1925, in Waverly, New York, he was the oldest son of Dana Darias and Mildred Cortright Boyle. He worked as a journeyman tool and die maker for Bell Aerosystems, Trico, and American Optical. He proudly served his country in the South Pacific aboard the U.S. Navy's USS Alderamin (AK-116) during World War II as a machinist mate, second-class. He attended several USS Alderamin reunions from 1996 to 2009. He also enjoyed hunting, camping with his family, spending time at his cabin in Belmont and traveling the U.S. with his wife in their motor home.

Dana is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly Stein Boyle. They were married in Waverly May 16, 1946, 24 days after his discharge from the U.S. Navy. They had five children: John R. Boyle, who died shortly after birth, Mark D. Boyle of Warren, Pennsylvania, Dana J. Boyle (Jane) of Grand Island, Lance C. Boyle (Judy) of Amherst, and Nanci E. Backlund of Grand Island; eight grandchildren: Michael Backlund (Ashley), Laura Backlund, Jessica Backlund, Katie Boyle Shaner (Justin) of Olean, Lindsey and Steven Boyle of Grand Island, Dawn Hurley and Jason Fisher (Terry), and three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Madison and Jacob Hurley, along with many nieces, nephews and their respective spouses and families. In addition to his parents, Dana was predeceased by his two brothers, Richard and Ray, and a sister, Phyllis Flynn, a treasured mother-in-law, Burnadean Stein of Scio, and a dear sister-in-law, Gloria Walthers of Florida.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Scio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buffalo VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Ave., Buffalo, NY 14215, or to the Grand Island Fire Co., 2275 Baseline Road, Grand Island, NY 14072-1711.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East St., Warren, Pennsylvania.
