South access road paving closes road to vehicles, including shuttle service and pedestrians

The New York Power Authority shuttle service, free fishing pier and fish cleaning station at the base of its Niagara Power Project's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant will be unavailable Friday. Tandem paving of the south access road leading to the fishing pier will force road closure to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic, including the shuttle service.

The pier and shuttle service are expected to re-open Saturday, in time for the annual Wildlife Festival Kids Fishing Derby.

The Kids Fishing Derby entrants are eligible to win a half-day fishing adventure in the lower Niagara River, compliments of Capt. Steve Drabczyk of DRAB6 Fishing Charters in Lewiston. Prizes for the biggest catch will be awarded in two age groups: 9 years-old and younger, and from the age of 10 to 15.

Contestants can cast their line in any of Niagara County's popular public fishing waters, including the Niagara Project fishing pier or Lewiston Reservoir. Scales will be open at the Niagara River Anglers tent at the Wildlife Festival in front of the Power Vista between noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Those who want to access the fishing pier must park in the "C" parking lot of the Niagara Power Vista, the Niagara project's admission-free visitor center.

Parking is free of charge. From the parking area, a shuttle service will transport passengers to and from the fishing pier from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (running every half-hour). This will be the only way to access the pier. The shoreline stairway also remains closed.

The shuttle will transport passengers from the parking lot free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis, and will follow the same rules on the return ride from the fishing pier. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the shuttle or at the pier. Small coolers and fishing equipment will be allowed inside the shuttle vehicle.

Passengers must use the shuttle and wait for it at the designated pick-up locations only. For safety reasons, if any visitors to the fishing pier leave the fenced area and walk through the construction zone, the Power Authority reserves the right to close the fishing pier and terminate the shuttle service.

NYPA's fishing piers near the Upper Mountain Fire Co. at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the Niagara River intakes are not affected by the reconstruction project. Both sites are open daily from dawn to dusk and operate free of charge.

When completed this fall, the new redesigned, paved road will offer safer access to the fishing pier for vehicles and pedestrians. The new riverside walkway will include a protective guardrail.
