The Old Stone Chimney, the oldest stone structure on the upper lakes, marked the southern end of the Niagara Portage. Lewistonians know the legacy of the Portage and the Lower Landing as well as anyone, yet the Old Stone Chimney, virtually hidden since 1962, is shrouded in mystery.

The Old Stone Chimney is slated to be moved for the third time in 2015 to create a new focus on the chimney. The Niagara Portage Old Guard, founded in 2012, has done more research on the Upper Landing and The Old Stone Chimney than any one person or group has done in nearly 100 years. It has a working relationship with several local entities regarding the chimney and a vision of what may become "Upper Landing Park" on the shores of the Upper Niagara River.

June of 2015 will mark the 100th anniversary of the placement of a bronze plaque on the chimney.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, the Historical Association of Lewiston invites readers to come and listen to the plans for a new focus on heritage tourism in the Niagara Frontier, a tradition sure to promote the significance of the entire region. "De-Mystifying The Upper Landing and Joncaire's Old Stone Chimney" will be discussed at 7 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 915 Oneida St. (fellowship hall entrance).

The event is free to attend, and refreshments will be served.
