Grandpaws Pet Emporium has opened a Village of Lewiston café that benefits your sweet tooth and someone's future furry best friend.

Grandpaws Café for Good hosted a grand opening Saturday at 402 Center St. - just steps from the pet store. The corner eatery offers an assortment of coffees, specialty teas, gourmet cheeses, soups, sandwiches and baked goods. It also sells a dozen rotating Lake Effect ice cream flavors.

Some of the dishes Saturday included a breakfast sandwich made with scrambled eggs, cheese and bacon on a toasted English muffin ($6) or grilled panini-style on ciabatta bread ($7); smoked salmon with artisan cream cheese on a toasted bagel ($7); and gourmet macaroni and cheese ($5).

Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. Ice cream will be served year-round.

Café profits will go to local animal rescue groups working to find forever homes for abandoned and unwanted cats and dogs.

The grand opening continues Sunday. Customers can enjoy a free small cup of coffee with a coupon printed in Saturday's Sentinel.
