Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Aug. 22, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 199 calls from Aug. 9 to 15. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 14 burglary false alarm calls and seven fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, Aug. 9

•East Park Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated he observed a male subject in his backyard during the late hours of the night when he returned home. The subject then fled through neighboring yards on foot. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject by the description given. Nothing was reported stolen, but the subject had unscrewed the light bulb in the security light in the backyard.

•Elmwood Road, animal loose - A complainant stated that a dog that was unleashed chased her as she walked by a residence. The dog control officer was notified.

•Huth Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, someone had removed screens from windows on the exterior of Huth Road Elementary School. It was determined no entry was gained into the building.

•East River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent weeks, someone stole a kayak from his yard.

•Ransom Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Spicer Creek Run, all-terrain vehicle operation - A complainant stated that a small mini-bike was operating in the roadway. Deputies located the operator at a nearby address and advised him.

•Staley Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Staley Road, animal loose - A complainant stated that her dog got loose from the yard sometime in the last several hours. The dog control officer was notified.

•Town Hall Terrace, noise complaint - A complainant stated that a subject was constantly revving his motorcycle outside of his apartment building. The subject left prior to the arrival of patrol. The complainant was able to speak with the subject before the subject left the premises and advised him of the noise problem he was creating.

Sunday, Aug. 10

•Staley Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Fareway Lane, disorderly person - A complainant stated that his friend was intoxicated and becoming belligerent. Deputies escorted the subject from the property at the request of the complainant, who declined to press charges.

•Grand Island Boulevard, disturbance - A complainant stated that a group of youths in a vehicle were yelling at each other in the parking lot of a motel. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint was unfounded.

•West River Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a motorcycle was traveling down the road at a high rate of speed. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Bedell Road, grass fire - A complainant stated that there appeared to be a grass fire in the area of Veterans Park. Deputies checked the area and determined the fire was coming from a nearby residence and was controlled in an enclosed fire pit.

•Stony Point Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, someone stole various items from her unlocked vehicle.

•Baseline Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, patrol arrested a 25-year-old man for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a Department of Motor Vehicles check showed his license was currently suspended. The man was further charged with criminal contempt in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor) after it was discovered that he was violating a stay order of protection by having the protected person inside the vehicle as a passenger. The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•East Park Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that he observed people with flashlights near the National Grid power junction during the late evening hours. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any persons on the property. No damage was observed.

Monday, Aug. 11

•Stony Point Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that there was a large snake in her backyard. The complainant was able to remove the snake and called back to cancel the request for police assistance.

•Love Road, disorderly person - A complainant stated that an intoxicated female subject was inside a vehicle in front of a business. The vehicle left prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Havenwood Lane, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the owners.

Tuesday, Aug. 12

•Stony Point Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that, while she was at a business, someone stole her purse from a wagon.

•Sheree Drive, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood and was starting fights with other dogs. The dog control officer was notified.

•Ransom Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, an unknown person stole various items from her unlocked vehicle.

•Whitehaven Road, fire - The Erie County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Unit was called to respond to assist the Grand Island Fire Co. after a fire had broken out in a bathroom building on River Oaks Golf Course.

•Stony Point Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that several youths were attempting to open the doors to vehicles at the Grand Island Fire Substation. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the youths by the description given.

Wednesday, Aug. 13

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of a business. No injuries were reported.

•Second Street, suspicious person - A complainant stated that several subjects were in her yard and knocking on her windows during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any persons. No damage was reported.

Thursday, Aug. 14

•Second Street, suspicious person - A complainant stated he observed a male subject walking around the residence of the above complaint. Deputies determined the male subject had come to assist the original female complainant.

Friday, Aug. 15

•Whitehaven Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of several 911 hang-up calls at a business. Deputies determined that the call was a misdial.

•Sunset Drive, burglary - A complainant stated that, sometime in the past week, someone entered his unlocked garage and stole an all-terrain vehicle from inside. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Grand Island Boulevard, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was left in a vehicle while in a business parking lot and was concerned for the animal's well-being. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any dogs left in vehicles.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of a business. No injuries were reported.

•Baseline Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that the gate to a construction area around the school was open and was concerned youths might get into the items left inside. Deputies determined the gate was damaged and unable to be closed.

•Park Lane, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she heard an unknown person ringing her doorbell and pounding on the door seemingly in an attempt to break in during the late evening hours. The subjects left prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area and, after speaking with several other neighbors, it appeared some youths in the area were ringing doorbells and running away. No subjects were observed in the area and no damage was reported.

•Baseline Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby address. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner.
