Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Aug. 8, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 375 calls from July 19 to Aug. 1. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 19 burglary false alarm calls and nine fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, July 19

•West River Road, loud music - A complainant stated that a loud party was taking place nearby during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the source of the loud music and advised the occupants.

•Hennepin Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that it sounded like a loud explosion had happened somewhere in the area of his residence. Deputies checked and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a vehicle was sitting stationary in the intersection of Long Road during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any vehicles sitting at the intersection.

•Whitehaven Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, an unknown vehicle struck his mailbox and fled the area.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Alt Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that several subjects were looking around outside of a neighbor's house and did not belong there. Deputies checked the area but found no persons on the property.

•Long Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property found - A complainant stated that he found a wallet near the pump at a gas station. Deputies returned the wallet to the owner using an identification found inside the wallet. Nothing was reported missing by the owner.

•Hidden Oaks Court, barking dog - A complainant stated that a dog was barking for hours somewhere nearby. Deputies located the dog and advised the owners.

•Park Place, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a moving truck was idling in a neighboring driveway and making a lot of noise. Deputies located the truck and advised the driver, who turned the vehicle off.

•Riverdale Drive, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that several youths next door were in their driveway and making a lot of noise during the late evening hours of the night. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that someone was attempting to get inside of his motel room during the late hours of the night. Deputies spoke with staff on location and determined another customer had just gotten the room numbers mixed up.

Sunday, July 20

•Whitehaven Road, motorist broke down - A complainant stated that a vehicle was broken down on the overpass of the I-190. Deputies checked the area but did not find any drivers in need of assistance.

•Ransom Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated she was awoken late at night by the sound of voices on her back porch. She observed a subject in her backyard and called 911. Deputies checked the area but found no persons walking around. It was determined a short time later that the complainant's son and friends were the subjects in the yard.

•East River Road, trespass - A complainant stated that several subjects in a boat were on his dock and were not supposed to be there. Deputies located the subjects and advised them at the request of the complainant, who did not wish to pursue any charges.

•Baseline Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a vehicle pulled into the Grand Island Fire Co. Station No. 3 parking lot and did not seem to belong there. Deputies located the driver, who stated he had pulled off the road to make a phone call. The driver was advised and left without incident.

Monday, July 21

•Grand Island Boulevard, fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. with a report of a fryer fire at a restaurant.

•Tracey Lane, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole various items from several vehicles in his driveway.

•Love Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•West River Road, suspicious person / marijuana arrest - A complainant stated that several subjects appeared to be smoking marijuana on the bridge overpass entrance to Big Six Marina. Deputies located the subjects, and their investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, all of Grand Island. The woman was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana (a violation), while the men were charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree (a class B misdemeanor). All subjects were issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•South State Parkway, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - Employees of a business stated that a female subject was caught shoplifting from the store. Deputies' investigation led to the arrest of a 55-year-old woman from Grand Island for attempted petit larceny (a class B misdemeanor). She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Greenway Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that an injured raccoon was in her backyard. The complainant was advised to contact a private trapper.

•Whitehaven Road, drunk driving - A complainant observed a vehicle swerving all over the roadway and then pull into a gas station. The female driver appeared intoxicated and was having trouble walking, according to the complainant. As deputies arrived on location, the female driver attempted to flee the scene on foot and after being approached by patrol began to fight with deputies. Deputies also determined the female was intoxicated. The 45-year-old woman, from Grand Island, was charged with obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor), resisting arrest (a class A misdemeanor), disorderly conduct (a violation), aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree (a class E felony), driving while intoxicated (a class E felony), and several traffic infractions for not having a valid license. The woman refused to submit a sample of her breath for chemical analysis. She was charged with felony driving while intoxicated and felony aggravated unlicensed operation due to having a previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years and a check of her license showed it was currently revoked. The woman was then transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending her arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

Tuesday, July 22

•Fix Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident involving a telephone pole. No injuries were reported.

•Bedell Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated a male subject climbed up to the second floor balcony of an apartment and then entered through the sliding glass door. Deputies located the subject inside the apartment and determined he was a friend of the occupant who was also inside.

•Beaver Island State Park, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Woodcreek Lane, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a neighbor was shooting a bow and arrow in his own backyard but was concerned due to the close proximity of the residences. Deputies located the subject and advised him.

•Waterford Park, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked at a neighbor's house and it did not appear the neighbors were home. Deputies located the subject and determined he was a friend of one of the children residing at the residence.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked in a business parking lot during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the driver nearby and determined it was an employee leaving late from work.

Wednesday, July 23

•Woodstream Drive, larceny - A complainant stated that she noticed a distinctive-looking statue in the back of a pickup truck near her residence and when she went home realized the statue belonged to her and was missing from her yard. Deputies spoke to the owner of the truck who was uncertain why the statue was placed in his truck. It was determined most likely the act was done by youths in the neighborhood sometime during the night.

•Broadway suspicious incident - A complainant stated that smoke was coming from a sewer in the street. Deputies advised the complainant that the Grand Island Water Department is conducting tests on the sewers and that was the source of the smoke.

•Baseline Road, residential burglary - A complainant stated that, sometime during the day, an unknown person entered her apartment and stole various items from inside. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•East River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that he observed what appeared to be a boat that had sunk in the river across from his residence. Deputies coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard and determined the object to be foam floating in the water.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two male subjects were outside of a convenience store disturbing customers. The subjects left prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects by the description given.

•Whitetail Run, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the last day, someone stole some lawn decorations from her yard.

Thursday, July 24

•Sherry Drive, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that several cars on the street seemed to have been egged by unknown persons. Several neighbors also reported throughout the day that vehicles and residences had been egged.

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident that occurred in the parking lot of a local business. No injuries were reported.

•South State Parkway, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road near Love Road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle matching the description given.

•West River Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two subjects were sitting on the side of the road and seemed to have flashlights during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any persons.

Friday, July 25

•Staley Road, animal loose - A complainant stated that two horses were walking in the roadway. Deputies determined the animals were deer.

•Whitehaven Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 34-year-old man from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a Department of Motor Vehicles check showed his license was currently suspended. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Stony Point Road, wires down - A complainant stated that wires were hanging from a pole nearby his residence. The phone and cable companies were notified.

•Stony Point Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Sheree Drive, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent hours, someone stole a tablet from her mailbox.

•Fairview Court, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a female subject came to her residence and was soliciting. Deputies located the subject, who had a permit from the Town of Grand Island to conduct business.

•East River Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was going door-to-door soliciting. Deputies located the subject, who also had a permit from the Town of Grand Island to conduct business.

•Ransom Road, suspicious vehicle - An employee of Grand Island High School was locking up the building and observed a vehicle parked in the school parking lot during the late evening hours. Deputies located the owner, who was on the campus walking his dog.

•Sheree Drive, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that an underage drinking party was being held at a residence nearby. Deputies spoke to all parties on location and determined everyone on the premises to be of legal drinking age.

Saturday, July 26

•Legion Drive, loud music - A complainant stated that a loud party was taking place at a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies spoke to the occupants of the residence in question and advised them.

•Evelyn Court, parking violation - A complainant stated that a neighbor parked a vehicle on the complainant's lawn. Deputies spoke to the neighbor, who agreed to move the vehicle.

•Stony Point Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated a raccoon was in her yard and appeared to be in distress. Deputies observed the raccoon and determined it was not a danger to anyone.

•Staley Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were sitting in the roadway and appeared to be cutting down a small tree. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any youths.

•East River Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a motorcycle was speeding down the road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the motorcycle by the description given.

•Baseline Road, Traffic Arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 65-year-old man from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree (a misdemeanor), driving a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a DMV check showed his license and registration were currently suspended. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated an intoxicated male was stumbling in and out of the roadway. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject by the description given.

Sunday, July 27

Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a vehicle in a business parking lot with heavy front end damage and airbags that had been deployed, but no driver was located. The driver was contacted and claimed he was involved in an accident but stated he was not injured.

•West River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated he received a phone call from an unknown number and the person on the other end of the line stated that the complainant's brother was in an accident and that he would not be released unless the complainant paid them $2,000. The complainant then drove to his brother's house and spoke with him in person to confirm the story was untrue. Deputies advised the complainant it was most likely a phone scam.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of a business. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was sitting in a restaurant and appeared to be intoxicated. Deputies located the subject at the bus stop nearby and determined he was not intoxicated and was just waiting for the bus.

Monday, July 28

•Grand Island Boulevard, Burglary - An employee of a gas station stated that when he arrived to open the store in the morning he noticed money was missing from the cash register. The complainant then found the back door to the business was open. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Grand Island Boulevard, Suspicious Person - A complainant stated that a male subject was in the vestibule of a bank and appeared to be banging on the windows and doors inside while yelling loudly. Deputies located the subject, who stated he was attempting to reach customer service for a discrepancy with his account. No damage was observed and the subject was advised to come back when the business was open to solve the problem.

•Ransom Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that youths were climbing on the construction equipment near the high school. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of a doughnut shop. No injuries were reported.

•Bedell Road, suspicious person with Vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle in Veterans Park during the late evening hours. The occupants were advised and left without incident.

Tuesday, July 29

•Winkler Drive, suspicious person with vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked on Winkler Road during the late hours of the night. The occupants of the vehicle were advised and left the area without incident.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious vehicle - Employees of a business stated that a vehicle was parked in the lot and did not belong to any guests or employees. The vehicle was issued a parking ticket.

•Bedell Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that his dog was attacked by two of his neighbor's dogs. The dog control officer was notified.

•Carl Road, animal loose - A complainant stated a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

•Whitehaven Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Whitehaven Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call from a business. Deputies checked and determined no persons were in need of emergency assistance.

Wednesday, July 30

•Hazelwood Lane, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call from a private residence. Deputies spoke to the occupants and determined the call to be a misdial.

•Beaver Island State Park, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a pickup truck was swerving in an out of the roadway. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that no employee was on location at the gas station and people seemed to be pumping gas and leaving without paying. Deputies spoke to an employee who stated the business was out of fuel and was closed for the day.

•East River Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a pickup truck was driving back and forth several times. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Staley Road, animal loose - A complainant stated a dog was running loose in the area. The dog control officer was notified.

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Sandy Beach Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that he observed a suspicious-looking maroon van in the area for the second day in a row. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

Thursday, July 31

•Baseline Road, animal complaint - Deputies located and removed a deceased fox from the roadway.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Grand Island Boulevard, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 22-year-old man from Buffalo for driving a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a DMV check showed his registration was currently suspended. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 32-year-old woman from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a DMV check showed her license was currently suspended. The woman was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that an unknown vehicle struck his parked car in the parking lot of a business and then fled the scene. No injuries were reported.

•First Street, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Park Place, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths in a vehicle were driving around the area and throwing tennis balls at people from the vehicle. The vehicle left prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

Friday, Aug. 1

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.
