The Miracle League of Grand Island and WNY is saying "Thank you" to the scores of volunteers who went to work on Father's Day weekend at Veterans Park to build the latest addition to the baseball complex for the disabled.

R.J. Wynne, president of the Miracle League of GI and WNY, said slightly more than 100 participants helped with the playground construction Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The playground is adjacent to the ball diamond and pavilion on Veterans Drive and will have the same safety surface as the one on the adaptive ball diamond for players with special needs.

The Miracle League benefitted from volunteer support from such groups as the Grand Island Lions Club, the Grand Island High School rugby team, Grand Island Rotary Club and many local contractors. The league also thanked Gene Mongan from John's Pizza & Subs for feeding the volunteers.

"It's not done yet, but we've made great progress as you can see when you drive into the park now," Wynne said.

The dedication date for the playground is Aug. 16.
