David H. Brown of Sanborn has a new mystery in print, while Dr. Erwin Brese of Town of Niagara has a second printing in progress of his spiritual journey book.

Brown will sign his new book "Who is Alpha?" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, in the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St. in Lockport.

"Who is Alpha?" follows mathematics professor Samuel Mohlar as he searches for a killer known only by the code name "Alpha" on the campus of Henry Dunster University. Assisted by his girlfriend Kay Townsend and her sister, Jenny, Mohlar must learn the identity of Alpha and retain possession of a mind-control drug formula he and his associates have taken from Alpha and his organization.

Brown's previous mystery novel, "The Elusive Chauffeur," also features mathematician Samuel Mohlar.

Brown retired after a 33-year career teaching mathematics at Niagara County Community College. In addition, he authored four mathematics books while teaching at NCCC.

Brown earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Admission to Brown's book-signing is free. Regular admission charges for the Erie Canal Discovery Center and Penney Gallery apply for the complex for other visits throughout the day.

The second printing is in process of Brese's book, "Sliding Home."

The first printing appeared in December 2013, and was sold through Grace Lutheran Church in LaSalle and the Samaritan Counseling Center's main office on Old Falls Boulevard in North Tonawanda. The book is now also being offered for sale at Beacon Christian Bookstore on Military Road in Town of Niagara and at St. John's Lutheran Church, Ward and Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield.

Brese is pastor emeritus of Grace Church, where he served for 16 years, retiring in 1999. Since then, he has assisted at various churches in Niagara and Erie counties, and continued his writing. In 2007, he issued his first book, "When Story Becomes Life," which is still selling copies.

This book is a collection of short stories coming from his Bible knowledge, his pastoral and counseling experiences. It has raised more than $7,000 for the Samaritan Counseling Center, where Brese now works in retirement. The latest book is also a benefit for the center, proceeds going to assist people who come with their needs, especially looking for someone to listen to them.

"Sliding Home" is an intertwining of the author's family stories, biblical stories, and his own creative stories to illustrate the spiritual journey that a person of faith travels. The overall analogy is of a baseball game, and the journey of a batter from home plate circling all the bases until he returns home. It is the trip of faith, love and hope, meant to assist people as they confront the various complexities and risks of living in this world yet traveling by faith.

The author concedes that he is between third base and home as he writes. He notes that some who have read the book got stuck after second base, a place where many get leery of making it home.
