The Lewiston Community Lions Club celebrated its fifth anniversary with a dinner, awards ceremony and installation of officers on June 3.

A highlight of the night was the swearing-in of new club President Regina Cecconi. The Lions honored Lion of the Year Bud Snell, while Lonny Gibbs and Theresa Tourbin received honors for their special contributions.

The 27-member club has tried to live up to the Lions motto, "We Serve." Since chartering, the club has raised approximately $40,000. At this point, upwards of $33,000 has gone to those in need, with more on the way. Some of the club's major donations include southern U.S. storm relief; Japan, following its earthquake; the victims of Hurricane Katrina; and the Haiti earthquake relief fund.

One of the largest local donations was to help a family of five, whose breadwinner was fighting cancer and needed a wheelchair ramp.

Numerous smaller donations have been made to many local organizations, helping the blind, the elderly and those with special needs.

To achieve the above, it not only takes a dedicated club, but much community support. The Lions Club said Lewiston has excelled in its giving. Lions extend their thanks to the community for supporting the club's annual golf fundraiser, setting a record this year with 107 golfers participating - many netting prizes donated by area businesses.

The club has produced its own website, http://www.allabouthistoriclewistonny.com/. Local businesses are charged $75 per year to advertise. The site has raised $4,500, which, in turn, has gone to support those in need (and provided advertisers with extra promotion).

The Lions Club also would like to thank Jay's Car Wash for allowing members to take parking fees during the Peach Festival. Thanks, too, to the individuals who stopped by the Lions area at the Harvest Festival and donated a dollar or two.

Those wishing to join the Lewiston Lions - to have some fun, enjoy good company and help serve - should contact membership Chair Ron Craft at 716-818-0360 or visit the Lewiston Lions page on Facebook.
